Trivore’s journey: from funding higher education studies to pioneering identity management

Trivore is a Finnish identity management specialist whose story began in 1989, when Kari Mattsson set up a company to finance his studies.

During his first years, Mattsson worked closely with the City of Turku’s social and health services, which provided a good foundation for his expertise in solving IT challenges in demanding environments.

“Practicality was always the key starting point for me. When I started in the late 80s, the intention was simply to finance my studies, but quickly networks and client relationships began to form that still carry on,” says Kari.

His pragmatic approach led him to solve his clients’ problems directly on the ground: “I was a bit like a potter – formulating what was needed and learning as I went.”

From projects to software

In 2000 Kari founded Trivore Oy and the company started to grow and develop from IT support to software solutions. One major step in the company’s growth was the mySync product, which helped users to wirelessly synchronise address books and calendars on Nokia communicators.

“Nokia’s own tool for address book synchronisation was clumsy and the customer needed a better solution. After piloting, we realised that there weren’t many solutions like this in the world, so we started developing mySync at full speed in 2005,” Kari recalls.

mySync became an important part of Trivore’s growth story. “It created a team of makers and a culture of creating high-quality, continuous-use products, which later carried over to identity management solutions like Trivore ID,” Kari explains. This development taught Trivore how scalable and flexible software can meet customer needs.

The journey towards identity management

The success of mySync laid the foundation for the development of Identity and Access Management (IAM), and in 2015 Trivore took the next big step with the launch of Trivore ID. This solution was the answer to the complex identity management needs of enterprises and brought Trivore to the centre of the IAM world.

“We had an incredibly strong foundation on which to build Trivore ID. It is still the cornerstone of our identity management,” Kari emphasises.

“We had an incredibly strong foundation on which to build Trivore ID. It is still the cornerstone of our identity management around which we later built Trivore eIAM, based on Zero Trust principles, which ensures that the right people have access to the right information at the right time.”

The Trivore eIAM, based on Zero Trust principles, was later built around the Trivore ID to ensure that the right people have access to the right data at the right time.

“This solution is particularly valuable for organisations that manage large numbers of users, critical information systems, and have a large number of external or temporary employees. When we started developing eIAM, microservices were just emerging, but we knew that an eIAM solution had to be scalable and flexible,” says Kari. “Now our technology choices have proven to be right and our identity services have shown to be robust.”

Long-term partnerships and success stories

Over the years, Trivore has built strong partnerships with many large organisations. For example, Trivore helps Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) to deliver a smooth travel experience for its passengers.

“HSL’s solution is a good example of how Trivore can scale its product to meet the needs of large organisations,” Kari says.

Other Trivore customers include Waltti Solutions, Pictue, Traficom, and a number of large companies.

In Waltti’s public transport applications, Trivore’s solutions provide information about passengers, their identities, products, and related fares. Trivore’s solution includes up-to-date product and fare information, enabling seamless payment transactions and product management.

“These partnerships are always about listening carefully to our customers. Their needs drive us, and we provide them with a solution that grows with them. This is our trademark,” Kari sums up.

Customer focus drives product development

Trivore has always listened to its customers and tailored its solutions to their needs. “In the past, we built solutions almost to order, but we found that productised solutions that can be adapted to customer needs serve both customers and our own development better in the long term,” Kari says. Thanks to its customer-centric approach and productised framework, Trivore’s products are easily customisable to meet the needs of different industries.

“It is important that customers’ business processes are taken into account in product development,” Kari explains. “The first customers partly determine the direction of the product, but the final development is done so that the product is general-purpose and can be applied more widely. This has been our strength – doing things right the first time.”

Looking to the future

Identity and access management has become an increasingly central part of organisations’ security and digital solutions.

“In the future, artificial intelligence and machine learning will bring new opportunities for IAM solutions,” Kari envisions. “Companies will gain operational efficiencies by automating their routine processes, and we see identity management as a key part of this evolution.”

“Our priority is to provide our customers with solutions that not only meet their needs today, but also help them in the future.”

Trivore will continue to invest in product development and focus on customer needs. “The most important thing for us is to stay up-to-date and offer our customers solutions that not only meet their needs today, but also help them in the future,” Kari sums up.
